JAMES MEEK was born in London in 1962 and grew up in Scotland. He writes for The Guardian, the London Review of Books and Granta. He was awarded the Royal Society of Literature's Ondaatje Prize for his novel The People's Act of Love. His fourth novel, We Are Now Beginning Our Descent, is partly based on his experiences in Afghanistan.
